Taster session:
If you are not sure whether Makaton training is for you, try the Makaton Taster session. There is no prior experience or knowledge of Makaton needed.
This session is designed to be delivered as a 'one-off' session which may be provided, for example, during a regular staff meeting within a setting, or arranged specifically to bring groups together.
Many interests can be catered for, for example:

Parents of prospective Makaton users

Staff within a particular setting (charities, education etc.)

Professional groups such as emergency services or health professionals

Managers or budget holders for doctors, dentists, shops etc.

The cost is £20 per participant you will receive a copy of 30 of the main signs and symbols used.
PLEASE NOTE: From 1st April 2023 there will be an extra cost of for any bespoke signs and symbols required which are not in the core vocabulary.
Level 1 training:
Level 1 training is the starting point for learning Makaton. It is recommended for:

parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work

participants who need a more detailed knowledge about using and applying Makaton to develop the communication skills of others
Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme.
Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.
You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and part A of the Additional Core Vocabulary.
When you attend a level 1 workshop you will receive a workshop manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your level 1 training certificate if you wish to go on to level 2.
The Level 1 course can be run online via zoom, (over either two days or four days) or face to face for 1 six hour session. All sessions must be fully attended to achieve your certificate.

Level 2 training:
Level 2 training builds on the knowledge you gained in Level 1 training.
You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and part B of Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
Level 2 training is made up of two modules which can be delivered in a number of different ways. I currently run them over two days, however they can be split into shorter session should your organisation require them to fit in with training/inset days.
The course is currently run online via zoom, over two days of four hours per day. Both days must be fully attended to achieve your certificate.
To participate in level 2 training, you must have completed level 1 training (this can be completed with another tutor, as long as a certificate of attendance can be presented).

Level 3 training:
Level 3 training helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day.
You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1 and 2 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary. You will gain knowledge about the components of signs and how to analyse them. You will lean techniques that make information accessible and meaningful to core users.
When you attend a level 3 workshop you will receive a workshop manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your level 3 training certificate if you wish to go on to level 4.
The Level 3 course can be run online via zoom, (over either two days or four days) or face to face for 1 six hour session. All sessions must be fully attended to achieve your certificate.

Level 4 training:
In the level 4 training you will learn to use the signs and symbols from stages 7-8, and be able to use them in your daily environment, and use techniques for placement, directionality and movement.
You will continue to develop confidence in using signs and symbols accurately and fluently, continue to develop skills in interpreting and translating information and be knowledgeable about the techniques that make information accessible and meaningful to core users.
When you attend a level 4 workshop you will receive a workshop manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance.
The Level 4 course can be run online via zoom, (over either two days or four days) or face to face for 1 six hour session. All sessions must be fully attended to achieve your certificate.
